Live, Work, and Play in Charleston

Shopping

Unsurprisingly, Charleston is one of the largest retail hubs in the South, especially if you're looking for some locally-owned boutiques, shops, or art galleries.

You'll find most of the area's smaller retailers nestled on Market Street and King Street, both of which are located in the heart of Downtown. The Ben Silver Collection, Key West Hat Co, and House of Sage are all popular favorites. If you're looking for some larger stores, the Citadel Mall and The Shops at Belmond Charleston Place feature plenty of stores that you know and love.

Dining

Get ready to savor some of the best flavors in the South—Charleston is known for its longstanding food scene that satisfies even the most particular palates.

Looking for recommendations? If you want to experience locally-sourced cuisine in a homey setting, you can't go wrong with Husk. And if you'd rather sample some no-fuss coastal bites, Hank's Seafood Restaurant is the place to go. Other top spots include the Charleston Grill, High Cotton, and Magnolias.

Employment

Although Charleston is primarily known for its bustling tourism industry, it also serves as a major port city, as well as a hub for major corporations and tech companies. Some of the area's largest employers include the United States Military, Boeing, Tridant Health System, and the Charleston County School District.

Charleston residents won't have to deal with a long commute, either. Easy access to major roads, such as US-78 and I-26, make getting around a breeze. The area also has its own airport, two Amtrak stations, and the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.

Schools

Are public schools a major factor in your home search? If so, you'll be pleased to know that students living in the Charleston area are primarily served by the Charleston County School District. However, many children are also zoned for the Berkeley County School District or attend private institutions.

Many major colleges and universities also call Charleston home. Perhaps the most notable one is the Citadel, one of the largest military institutions in the nation. Other options include the College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina.
